Ecuadorian Roses: Why They’re Recognized Worldwide

If you’ve ever bought a bouquet of fresh-cut roses at your local grocery store or florist shop, there’s a good chance those flowers were grown in Ecuador. Our country is one of the largest exporters of fresh-cut roses in the world.

Ecuador sits right on the equator, creating optimal growing conditions for premium roses. Its unique geography results in flowers that are larger, brighter, and longer-lasting. Royal Flowers takes pride in sustainably harnessing our country’s rich environment to bring customers some of the highest-quality rose varieties available.

What Makes Ecuadorian Roses Different?

Ecuadorian roses are unique and recognized around the world first and foremost because of their quality. Premium roses are distinguished by their size, color, and vase life. Compared to many roses grown elsewhere, Ecuadorian flowers tend to have:

  • Larger blooms
  • Longer stems
  • Brighter colors
  • Longer vase life

All of these factors make Ecuadorian roses a top choice for florists, designers, and wholesalers who source flowers for events and stores.

Why Ecuador Is Ideal for Growing Roses

The reason Ecuadorian roses are so high-quality is because of the country’s unique and optimal growing conditions.

Ecuador sits right on the equator, meaning flowers grown here receive strong and direct sunlight throughout the year. Unlike other regions with major seasonal weather changes, Ecuadorian roses benefit from consistent light that allows for steady growth.

Most Ecuadorian roses are grown in the country’s Andean mountain region. This area, which surrounds the capital city of Quito, sits at very high elevations — between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, or 8,200 and 9,800 feet, above sea level. At these altitudes, lower oxygen levels and cooler temperatures cause flowers to grow more slowly while using more energy to develop thick stems and large blooms.

Another benefit of Ecuador’s Andean mountains is the area’s volcanic soil. It is extremely rich in minerals and ideal for holding moisture, supporting healthy root development and providing the nutrients needed to grow sturdy stems, vibrant petals, and long-lasting blooms.

The Most Popular Ecuadorian Rose Types

Another reason roses from Ecuador are particularly sought after is the country’s ability to grow a wide variety of rose types — not just classic single-stem red roses, but also romantic garden roses and specialty blooms in unique colors.

Demand for Ecuadorian roses usually peaks around holidays like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, when florists, wholesalers, supermarkets, and retailers need consistently high-quality, fresh-cut roses to fill increased orders. They are also widely used for weddings, galas, corporate events, and other celebrations year-round.

Long-Stem Roses

Long-stem roses are the classic single-bloom roses most commonly grown and exported from Ecuador. Botanically, most of these are hybrid tea roses, which have long stems, large flower heads, and excellent vase life. A timeless example is our new, deep red Dallas variety.

Garden Roses

Garden roses have a distinct look from the standard roses you may associate with Valentine’s Day or other holidays. Their more intricate ruffled texture makes them extra luxurious and slightly reminiscent of peonies. Their layered blooms have made garden roses especially popular for weddings. Two great examples from Royal Flowers are our pink Country Candy variety and our cream-colored Antonia Gardens variety.

Spray Roses

Spray roses have multiple smaller flower heads growing from one stem. These tend to be a bit more leafy than single-stem roses, which makes them ideal for blending into larger arrangements and adding fullness. A beautiful example from Royal Flowers is our Orange Babe variety.
